PALS
Frequently Asked Questions

(If you have a question that's not on this list,
feel free to email pals@pediatricfocus.org
or leave voicemail at 503-972-8947.)

I can't get the CD to work.

Contact the American Heart Association for tech support at 877-242-4277, or visit their
support page.

I tried to leave voicemail and I got a fax machine.

Sorry. We use a messaging service that can usually tell the difference between a voice message
and a fax, but sometimes it errs. Please just try again, and if it still doesn't work please email us.

I faxed something to you and my fax didn't go through.

If you used our new number, 503-972-8947, see above. If you used our old fax number, it
doesn't work anymore.

I lost my PALS card, can I get a new copy of it?

Yes. It'll cost you four dollars. Just tell us who you are and where we should mail it.

Whom do I make checks out to?

OREF (Oregon Research and Education Foundation), a local nonprofit that serves as an
umbrella organization for several medical-education programs. Tax ID number 93-0867408 if
you're curious.

My last PALS class was early September, 2007. Can I take a one-day recert in late
September, 2009?

Yes. Your card is good through the end of the month (and should say so).

My card expired eight months ago. Can I still take the one-day recert?

Sorry. The AHA has gone back to letting us give people a grace period, and sometimes we do,
but only an extra month or two. Please try to recertify on time.

Where are your classes now?

We're teaching our Portland-area classes at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center
The address is 9205 SW Barnes Rd; Portland, OR, 97225.

Questions People Don't Feel Comfortable Asking

I'm not 100% clear on the registration procedure.

See this page for some often-neglected details about the process.

You charge more than some other classes.

Yes. We're sorry about that. We set our prices just high enough to cover our expenses, which
are considerable. We've hired the most experienced and knowledgeable faculty we could find,
and we try to pay them decently, though they are all getting paid less for PALS than for their
primary jobs. Also, we feed our students, and we try to feed them well, which isn't cheap;
some recent cost-cutting experiments have drawn negative reviews. The loss of free classroom
space has hurt our budget too. (If you have 24 to 36 people, and classroom space in Oregon or
southern Washington, we can teach a class for you at a significant savings.)

I heard Dr. Cristofani is at St. Vincent now? What's up with that?

Well, Legacy declined to renew her contract after July 2006, and then St. Vincent offered her a
job as a hospitalist in their new peds department, and she's pretty much landed on her feet. You
should feel free to ask her yourself, though — she really doesn't mind talking about it, though
she always hesitates to be the first one to bring it up. Her new pager is 503-301-3029, and her
email is cynthia.cristofani@providence.org.

How do you pronounce "Cristofani"?

"krisst-OFF-uh-nee".
